DESCRIPTION:

The Commerce Department will block new downloads and software updates

for TikTok after President Trump¡¯s August executive order requiring the

Chinese-owned app be sold to an American company or be shut down in the U.S.

TRANSCRIPT:

Tik Tok¡¯s viral videos may soon disappear thanks to unprecedented new orders

from the White House. Starting this Sunday, the commerce department will block

new downloads and software updates for the Chinses owned app to safe guard

the national security of the United States with a total ban coming November 12th.

We have to have the total security from China. We¡¯re not going to do anything

to jeopardize security. The ban which also impacts WeChat,

another Chinses app, comes after an executive order issued by President

Trump requireing TikTok be sold to a US company or shut down in the USA.

Allegeing it collects American user data that can be accessed by the

Chinese government. Tik Tok¡¯s CEO pushed back in our interview last month.

What¡¯s your response to that? So,no, we¡¯re not a national security threat,

and we have said that time and again. We have very strict data access

and controls. Today, Tik Tok says it plans to challenge the new ban saying

we already committed to unorecedented levels of additional transparency

and accountability.WeChat says they have given the government a

comprehensive proposal to address their concern. Meantime, the ACLU

calls this move an abuse of power by the federal government.

There is a blantant disregard for first amendment right here and it harms security

and privacy because it does things like blocking software updates like the kinds

we get on our apps all the time that can fix vulnerabilities and prvide security.

The White House could still save Tik Tok ahead of the Sunday ban. President

Trump is simultaneouslty considering Tik Tok¡¯s offer to partner with Oracle an

American tech company.

QUESTIONS:

1. What do you know about Tik Tok?

2. Discuss the stand of the USA president regarding the said Chinese application.

3. Do you agree with President Trump¡¯s decision regarding the ban of Tik Tok

in their country? Why or why not?
