Description:

Young men in China are increasingly turning to plastic surgery to raise their odds of success, in a country where social media is changing the standards of beauty not only for women. Xia Shurong, a 27-year-old researcher, is among the millions of male white-collar workers who want to transform their looks by going under the knife.

Trancription:

Beauty standards can be exacting in China. Millions of young men are now turning to cosmetic surgery to boost their success in life. Xia Shurong is one of them. The 27-year-old researcher wanted to change ¡°engineering geek" look. Xia Shurong: When I was a child, I was not confident about my appearance. I grew up in the countryside. My face was dark, my skin was bad, I thought my appearance was not good, in general, so I always felt inferior. Xia is reshaping his nose- his second cosmetic procedure this year. He already spent 40,000 yuan (USD$6,195) on a previous face-filler treatment. He thinks cosmetic surgery will improve his odds of success and boost his self- confidence. Xia Shurong: I think that cosmetic surgery is about making yourself feel better. It is not like spending money buying an LV or a Gucci handbag, which looks good but is not practical. The surgery gives you a sense of self-improvement, you open up opportunities for yourself. If you have self-confidence, i feel that it will positively affect your personal and work life. Around 17% of China's male white-collar workers have had cosmetic treatments. Nai Wen: Plastic surgery changed my life. Regarding my previous appearance, you can't say I was very ugly, but I looked very ordinary. My mother said it was good enough ¡°why bother doing the surgery. It is unnecessary.' But I didn¡¯t agree so I pursued it on my own. But I didn¡¯t agree, so I pursued it on my own. The pressure to look good is partly fueled by popular male beauty tutorials on social media. Wu Wenyun:There is a saying in the plastic industry that male customers should be given special attention because once men pay attention to details, they will be more demanding than women.
