Description:

After centuries of being the trade of monks, beer-brewing has also become a source of income for a group of nuns in Belgium. The sisters of Maradret Abbey turned to crafting beer as a way to fund repairs for their convent. They collaborated with the Belgian brewery John Martin to launch two beers on the market. The nuns use spelt – a grain mentioned in centuries-old texts written by a saint who inspired their order – as well as other ingredients that they grow in the gardens of their convent.

Transcription:

A group of nuns in Belgium have 'turned to drink' to fund repairs to their convent. With no income, the nuns entered a trade historically dominated by monks: beer- brewing. Sister Gertrude: We didn¡¯t have enough income to allow us to maintain the building. It was therefore necessary to find an effective means to generate income. Making beer...allowed us to do this. For centuries, Belgian breweries paid royalties to use the names of abbeys for their beers. Until now, they had only done so with the abbeys of monks. With help from brewer John Martin, the nuns of Maradret Abbey launched 2 beers over the summer. The convent garden provides all botanical elements used in the beer. But the main ingredient is spelt. It¡¯s a grain mentioned in centuries- old texts written by Saint Hildegard, who inspired the order Sister Gertrude: We wanted beer made from the cereal spelt, for which we have great esteem because of its virtues, as well as medicinal plants, since our aim was to make a beer that could improve people's health. Our project was about respect for human nature, consisting of not eating and drinking just anything. A herbal beer achieve our goals of helping people with their health. The nuns allow themselves 1 bottle of beer per week, which they drink on Sunday. Sister Agathe: I really like this beer, so if i could drink this beer everyday, I would be so happy.

Question:

1. How did the sisters of Maradret Abbey to find an effective means to generate income? 2. Specify the ingredient of their beers? What is their main aim to make a beer?

3. What does nuns allow themselves?
