Description:

Located at South Korea¡¯s westernmost tip, Baekryeong Island is far closer to North Korea than the South. To deter invasion, tanks line the roads, guards are mounted on every hill and concrete pyramid-shaped fortifications cover the beaches. The nearly 5,000 residents who live here have learned to live under constant low level threat.

This South Korean island has more soldiers than residents Baekreong is closer to North Korea than the South In this fortress you can see tanks on roadsides and guards on every hill The beach is covered with concrete pyramid shaped fortifications

About 5, 000 residents who live here are under constant threat

especially after North Korea launched a blitz of missile test in 2022

Kim Keum-sook: In fact I really still live with that fear of what if one person infiltrates and destroys a whole neighbourhood Sometimes I dream of North Koreans invading.

Baekreong is of strategic importance as it helps control vital Yellow Sea shipping lanes The South Korean army now regularly conducts artillery drills on the island

Lee Chung-dong: ( The South Korean government) is committed ( to defending Baekreong Island)

because they know that if Baekreong falls, so will Incheon.

Now people have learned to live under constant threat

Kim Bok- hee: In the past when ( North Korea) first towards us, it was really scary and we all hid in the shelters. It happened a few times but now I'm pretty used to it and it doesn't bother me.
