Description:

A structure described as the largest 3D-printed building in Europe started taking shape in the southern German city of Heidelberg on May 5, 2023. Only two construction workers were at the site of the project. They said about 140 working hours over several days will be all that is needed to form a building measuring 55 metres long, 11 metres wide and 9 metres high (180 x 46 x 30 feet).

This project is billed as the largest 3D-printed structure in Europe.

Only 2 people are overseeing construction

that would normally require dozens of workers.

The construction robot piles up concrete layer according to computerrised plans.

It is expected to be finished in only about 140 working hours.

When complete, the building will measure

about 55x11x9 metres (180x46x30feet).

Hans-Joerg Kraus: I am convinced that 3D printing has a bright future.

At the same time, we should not believe that

in the future, everything will be built this way.

Here we are trying to determine whetehr this is a future-oriented product, and what kind of future-orinted product it is.

We chose a very special architectural design

which resembles a curtain.

There are also 18-degree overhangs which are impossible to build with conventional means.

Using a  3D printer for such buildings is predestined.

But its clear that not everyting built in the next 20 years will come form a 3D printer.

Other countries are also stepping up adoption of 3D-printing construction techniques.

In 2018, a French firm unveiled the first 3D-printed house that was built in just 18 days.

China is using 3D-printing technology to build a dam on the Tibetan Plateau.

3D-printing technology was initially developed to reduce waste in manufacturing.

It also shows promise for use in other fields

including medicine, defence and food production.
