Savannah: With Covid cases surging to new records all across the U.S. There is renewed emphasis again on face masks a key factor in lowering the transmission rate. Hoda: Joining us with a refresher and some new advice on what adults and kids should be wearing is NBC's senior consumer investigative correspondent Vicki Nguyen. Vicki, we do need this refresher a lot of us. We¡¯re wondering if we were going to be using these a lot we're pulling them back out again. So, what should what are the types of masks we should have? Vicki Nguyen: Good morning Hoda, Savannah and Craig. Yeah, there are a lot of things for us to sort of refresh our memories on. And also some changes coming with masks as well. So, three categories of masks that the CDC and public health officials want you to pay attention to. First, the one we're familiar with the cloth mask. Make sure that it's two layers of high quality material. Some cloth masks actually have a pocket where you can put a filter in. Even something like a coffee filter can make a difference if you are using a cloth mask. But, with Omicron spreading evading vaccines and so infectious. Many public health experts are recommending people upgrade their masks to a surgical mask. This basic one, you can find them everywhere or really consider the KN-95 or the N95. These are respirators and they are designed to filter out 95% of particles. That means also those virus particles and droplets that can carry coronavirus. So, these are the things that the CDC is recommending people wear. Even if they are fully vaccinated. Anytime that you are indoors in a public space or even if you're outdoors and you can't socially distance. Savannah: What about the fit? Because that's a big thing. You see a lot of people with mass but then you see them hanging off the nose and that kind of thing. So, can you give us a little refresher on that? Vicki Nguyen: Really, vital Savannah. To make sure that the mask fits over your nose and mouth snugly. So, with the surgical mask something people need to do is make sure that they pull it all the way out. So, that it really extends the mask. And then mash down this part you're looking for that little wire, to keep it very, very snug against your cheeks. Something you can do if you wear glasses or sunglasses if you put them on over your mask. And they're fogging up a lot. That means that you have too much space right here at the top of your cheeks. The other thing to consider people think K9 and N95s are a lot more comfortable because they have the traditional ear loop. However, if you want the most snug fit and this is maybe if you work in a job where you are constantly coming into contact with the public. You want to open this mask wide, put it under your chin and then you see how the elastic straps that's the big differentiator with N95 masks. They go all the way over your head. Not the most comfortable. But very, very snug not a lot of air is getting in between the sides of my cheeks or the tops of my cheeks. Craig: Hey, Vic. The kids are back in the classroom at least the overwhelming majority of them. Um... What¡¯s the recommendation for our youngest learners? Vicki Nguyen: Okay, so we talked to Dr. John Torres about this because I actually just sent my kids out the door this morning minutes ago, with two masks. He says obviously the KN95 and N95 are the most effective. But it can be really hard to find them in small kid sizes and also to keep them on your kids all day they're not the most comfortable. So, the second best option is to make sure you have a kid-sized surgical mask. And by the way look at what a difference. The kid size mask is from the adult size. So, you really want to make sure you have one that fits your child's face and you want to layer the cloth mask over that mask. So, the surgical mask goes on first and then the cloth mask. If you can't do that, surgical mask alone. Dr.Torres says least best but better than nothing, the two-layer cotton mask that fits your child. The best match certainly is the one that your child will wear and keep on the whole day when they're in the classroom. Hoda: All right, good advice. All right Vicki, Thank you so much. Savannah: Thank you very much. Description: With COVID-19 cases surging to new records across the country, there is a renewed emphasis on face masks for adults and children.
