Don¡¯t expect to see Mount Fuji from this popular photo
spot. Local officials are quickly erecting a barrier to deter tourists from
coming. The location has become a headache since it went viral on social media. It
has led to overcrowding, littering and illegal parking.
Local Resident 1: I`ve seen people walk into roads, people
using electric kickboards without following traffic rules and getting into
accidents. There have been many accidents involving foreign tourists recently.
Tourists have recently flooded the area searching for
the perfect shot of the mountain. The spot near a convenience store has become
known online as ¡°Mt. Fuji Lawson.¡±Local officials have said the new barrier
will be erected by mid -May 2024.
Tourist 1: It`s not like Instagram. We see the
reality, lots of people. it`s not natural.
Tourist 2: Yes,
I`ve read about it (the tourist issues). It`s a problem I think of circulation.
It looks like it`s one of the main roads to go to the railway station and the
traffic jam is big.
Visitors have flocked to Japan since Covid-19 pandemic
restrictions were lifted. A weakening yen has also brought in a new wave of
tourism.
Local Resident 2: I think it`s because of the weak yen
that there are so many tourists in the area. The number of foreign tourists coming
to our shop has risen too.
Japan`s currency exchange rate has dropped to a 34
-year low.
